The University Department of Sociology was integrated with the newly established Kolhan University, Chaibasa, in 2009 after it started in 2013. Since then, the department has grown manifolds. Taking into account the spirit of modern Sociology, the thrust areas of the Department are Indian Society, Social Change and Development, Sociology of Tribes, Rural Sociology, Industrial Sociology, Sociology of Religion, and many more. The vision of the Department is to move towards excellence in higher education in order to achieve a just, plural, and equitable society in consonance with constitutional values.

The Department provides quality interdisciplinary education and training through field work and report writing. Currently, it offers a Post-graduate Programme in Sociology. The Department intakes students for the Post Graduate programme. This two years course is further subdivided into four semesters under CBCS. The admission of students is stretched in three states – Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar. Most of the students belong to the tribal community.

The faculty members of the department have presented research papers at International and National forums. Faculty of the department have contributed more than ten articles in journals and one edited book. The Department is committed to character building, enhancement of intellectual abilities, empowering students with socio-economic, political, and ethical values, and developing competitive and professional skills for the growth of the dimensions of human consciousness, so that they can lead a better life and build a better society and nation.
