The University Department of Urdu was integrated with the newly established Kolhan University, Chaibasa, in 2009, though academic activities formally began in 2013. Since then, the department has grown significantly, with 15 students awarded Ph.D. degrees in Urdu.Apart from teaching, the department actively promotes Urdu literature and engages in Hindi–Urdu joint academic activities such as seminars, conferences, and quizzes.
