The University Department of Bangla, Kolhan University, Chaibasa was established in April 2011. The Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses were started from the sessions 2008–2011 and 2012–2014 onwards respectively. In the initial phase of Postgraduate teaching, Bangla classes were conducted in three wings: the University Department of Bangla, Kolhan University, Chaibasa; Jamshedpur Cooperative College, Jamshedpur; and Ghatshila College, Ghatshila. Most of the Postgraduate students and research scholars in Bangla came from rural areas and belonged to economically weaker sections, particularly tribal and backward communities. The surrounding areas of the University are predominantly tribal, and the economic condition of the people is very poor. At present, Postgraduate teaching in Bangla is being conducted at two centres: the University Department of Bangla, Kolhan University, Chaibasa, and the Postgraduate Department of Bangla, Baharagora College, Baharagora.
